Left unchecked, stress can contribute to many health problems and the workplace can be a major source of stress. That being said, it’s really important to know how to deal with the stress in the workplace.

I don’t know about you, but in my experience, it seems like some people specialize in stressing others out. It’s as if they have a special skill just for that, so they find new ways to stress you. Clearly they don’t really understand their purpose in life and things would go so much smoother without the added stress. But I guess some people need that kind of “excitement.”

Understandably, every situation that you may face, won’t be stress free, that’s a given. But you can manage the amount of stress you experience in a potentially stressful event. So here are six (6) strategies that shows you how to deal with the stress in the workplace.

How to Deal With The Stress in The Workplace

#1. Understand the cause of stress

First of all, to know how to deal with the stress in the workplace, you need to understand what’s really causing the stress. Here’s the thing. The common sense approach to stress suggests that it’s the situation that causes the stress. But that’s not really the case. Rather it’s your appraisal of the situation that determines your level of stress or if you experience any stress at all.

Think about how you appraise situations. For example, when you hear news that may impact you negatively, do you engage in thoughts of only all the negative things that could happen from that situation? In other words, are you the kind of person to make a mountain out of a mold hill?

If that’s the case, bet your bottom dollar that you’ll experience more stress. In a nutshell, what you believe or how you appraise the situation, is what would bring about the stress. Understanding this can change the level of stress you experience.

#2. Engage in challenge appraisals

Now that you know your thoughts of the situation can impact your stress level, changing the way you appraise a potentially stressful situation is important. Engaging in challenge appraisals would result in less stress if any at all.

For example, if you got fired from your job and you started thinking that you’ll never get another job, or that no one would hire you, etc., then that’s you engaging in a negative appraisal of the situation. Negative appraisals give rise to the experience of negative emotions and negative emotions bring on the stress.

However, if you changed your thought pattern about the situation; and look at the event (being fired) as an opportunity to do something different or to try something new, then you’ll definitely experience less stress. Because looking at the situation this way, you’re appraising the situation as a challenge. Challenge appraisals bring positive emotions and as a result, less stress.

#3. Stressfull situations can bring growth

Life without a little stress would be boring and some stressful situations can bring growth. For example, let’s say you have to deal with a fellow employee or boss you would rather not deal with. You know the kind.

Now, you can stress yourself over it or you can accept that we’re all different and learn how to deal with people who may not see things the same way you do. Learning how to deal with um, “difficult” people can make life interesting and bring about personal growth.

#4. Learn to delegate

Stress is in the eye of the beholder. We don’t all stress over the same things. That means that what might be stressful for you, might not be stressful for someone else.

So if you find a work task stressful for you, maybe there just might be someone else who might be able to and want to do that particular task. So delegate if you can. If you can’t delegate, then look at the task as a challenge and do that task to the best of your ability.

#5. Stressing won’t change the situation

I tell my colleagues this all the time, stressing over the situation won’t change. Stressing yourself over situations you can’r control, is definitely not how to deal with the stress in the workplace. All that stress would do, is affect the physiological functioning of your body in a negative way. Your body will become exhausted after a while if you are constantly exposing it to an inordinate amount of stress.

How to deal with the stress in the workplace

Once this happens, you’ll find that the flu might stay with you longer, your allergies might flare up or you might experience a host of inexplicable ailments.

Think of your immune system as your own little personal army. If that army is exhausted from being exposed to continued stress, how can it properly fight and keep protecting you from disease-causing organisms or substances.

#6. Find a hobby

If you don’t already have one, find yourself a hobby. Having a hobby or something that you look forward to and enjoy doing, can also help you deal with the stress in the workplace. It’s relaxing and it helps to take your mind off the potentially stressful event.

When my full time job started to become stressful, I started looking at work at home job opportunities. My goal was, once I found the right one, I’d be able to work at home without having to deal with the stress in the workplace.

So I took the path of least resistance and started my own online business. Doing this allowed me to do what I love and determine my own level of income. Whenever I felt stressed out at work, I’d just think about the fact that I have an online business and that thought alone takes my mind in a different direction. I’d just smile to myself, knowing that one day soon I’d be leaving the stress in the workplace behind me.

Having this particular hobby was enough to make me smile and forget the events that seemed stressful to me. Having your own work at home business is a great way to shake off the stress experienced in the workplace. Of course the financial rewards help as well.

Hey, the way things are going these days, I’d encourage anyone to start their own work at home business. That way you have something to fall back on just in case you’re the one to lose your job. I mean, look at what’s been happening with Target, Toys R Us, Macy’s and those other companies. Ecommerce is making inroads and it is not going anywhere anytime soon. Don’t wait to be the next statistic.

If you want to experience positive emotions in a potentially stressful situation, then appraise the situation as a challenge. You also want to keep in mind that you can experience personal growth from having to deal with a situation you may deem stressful.

Remember what might seem stressful to you, may not be stressful to someone else. Learn to delegate the stressful tasks if you can, and remember stressing over a situation won’t help you change it. Last but not least, find a hobby or something you can go to, to help you relieve those feelings of stress.
